GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.
Every other Wednesday we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted.
Design a Nintendo Land-like game for another company's franchises.
Nintendo Land is a showcase title for Nintendo's recently released Wii U console, offering a collection of Nintendo franchise-themed minigames wrapped in a theme park setting. In the world of Nintendo Land, Donkey Kong is reimagined as a tilt-controlled puzzler, Metroid is a cooperative third-person shooter, and Animal Crossing is a multiplayer collect-and-chase game.
Now imagine the possibilities if another company were to create a Nintendo Land-like game based on its own intellectual properties. Sega Land could star a wide variety of characters, from Sonic the Hedgehog to Alex Kidd to Toejam & Earl. Capcom Land might feature a multiplayer platformer themed around Mega Man, or a brawler/RTS hybrid based on Final Fight.
If you want to get a little more obscure, consider the possibilities offered by individual developers. Atlus Land, featuring attractions based on Persona and Etrian Odyssey! Clover Land, starring characters from Okami and God Hand! Volition Land, an (unusually violent) amusement park that bridges the gap between Saints Row and Red Faction!
For Game Career Guide's latest Game Design Challenge, your task is to create a set of Nintendo Land-like minigames based on another company's characters and franchises. In your entry, you should suggest at least two specific minigames that use different game series from the same company.
Try to focus on creating an entertaining mix of genres like Nintendo Land does, and explain the specific gameplay mechanics involved in each minigame. The games you create don't necessarily have to use platform-specific hardware features like Nintendo Land does, but if a certain kind of controller or console is especially well-suited to your gameplay concepts, you should note that you have a specific platform in mind for your creation.
Work on your ideas, figure out your strategy for coming up with a solution, and ask questions on the forum. When your submission is complete, send it to email@example.com with the subject line "Design Challenge: Everyone's Land." Please type your answer directly in the email body.
Submissions should be no more than 500 words and may contain up to three images. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title.
