GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge: iPhone Exclusive [07.16.08]
- GameCareerGuide.com staff
GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.
Each Wednesday we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have one week to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). The following week, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted along with some commentary.
This week's challenge comes from Gamasutra.com's features editor, Christian Nutt.
Design a touch-screen game exclusively for the Apple iPhone.
With the advent of the Nintendo Wii and DS, we've seen a good number of games that have been exclusive to the consoles and their controllers. To design a game that's truly exclusive to the Apple iPhone, you'll have think about how your game will be different from any other that can be played on a touch-screen device.
You'll also need to think about audience, as Apple wants to expand its market, not cater to a subset of people within the existing market. Who is likely to own an iPhone? Who is likely to be deciding whether they will purchase an iPhone, and what can your game do to further attract them to make the purchase? What is it about your game that will seem attractive to a market of iPhone owners?
In all likelihood, you will be targeting a large number people who are on the periphery of considering themselves standard video game players. Instead of thinking about the iPhone owners who are also video game players, think instead about the broad range of interactive systems -- for example, Facebook, Netflix, iTunes -- that are as popular as, or even more popular than the iPhone. Now think about the game-like elements they give to their users. How can you reach people who know these systems better than they know video game systems?
Ask questions and discuss your touch-screen ideas on the forum. When your submission is complete, send it to email@example.com with the subject line "Design Challenge: iPhone Exclusive."
Please type your answer directly in the email body. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title, and try to keep your answers to 500 words or fewer -- unless they're really good!
Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, July 23, 2008.
The responses for this challenge will appear the week of July 28, 2008.
