Game Design Challenge: Think Of The Children
[09.14.11]
- GameCareerGuide.com staff
GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.
Every other Wednesday we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted.
The Challenge
Create a game that caters to young children.
Assignment Details
While kids tend to love video games, it's rare to find a title made specifically for kids that's any good. Sure, there are exceptions out there, like the promising Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster from Double Fine, and games like Mario Kart tend to appeal to all ages, but many games that go out of their way to appeal to kids end up forgotten in a bin at your local Wal-Mart.
So then, what exactly makes a good kids' game?
For this latest Game Design Challenge, come up with a game that specifically appeals to the interests (and abilities) of young children. Keep in mind that young kids might not be able to read tutorial text, and might not be used to traditional game tropes that we tend to take for granted, so make sure your game can be played by users of all ages and skill levels. It's always a plus if adults will enjoy the game too!
Any platform or interface is free game -- let your imaginations run wild!
