Questions about how to break in and stay in?
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Game Writers Special Interest Group is working on a new book to follow-up Game Writing: Narrative Skills For Videogames.
The opening chapter, "How to Break In and Stay In," will be made up of interviews with game writing professionals from questions YOU ask. What advice do you need? What questions do you have? Are there game writers you'd like to hear advice from?
Post them here and keep an eye out as the book develops!
Well I am working on a review for 'Dark Messiah of Might and Magic' with the hopes of getting it published on http://www.elecplay.com.
One of the criticisim I received was that my review tended to be more of a re-telling of my experience playing the game rather then the game its self. Perhaps if there were some tips about falling into traps like these or how avoid them would be helpful. I know there are alot of these kind of things that people trying to break in have to learnt he long hard way, and maybe we could help out.
I know I always appreciate tips.
Here's more the sort of angle we're going with. The opening chapter will use interviews and stories from game writers to address key questions about how to break into game industry as a game writer and also how to stay in. The chapter will also reference the SIG surveys for statistical content.
I might be missing some questions, but here's what game writers will be asked:
What is your “breaking in” story?
What kind of degree/schooling is best?
Would the lack of a college degree create a barrier to entry-level jobs?
Who are the people you should try to network with? (i.e., who can hire you?)
What are some strategies for job interviews?
What should game writing portfolios include?
Which conferences should you attend?
What online resources are available?
What other resources (like books) can help?
What pay rates can you expect for writing positions, both starting and advanced?
What sorts of jobs lead to writing positions?
What other writing jobs cross over into games writing?
How does someone get their writing skill known when reaching across division lines?
