Studying Psychology, but I want to write and come up with Ideas for vgs.

Psychology is something I've always loved. I am considering being a neuropsychologist to study behavior. I'm also going to minor in English/Creative Writing. Though, I've always been a creative writer. Always getting told so, by teachers that I come up and write really good ideas for stories. I recently wrote a psychological story in my English class that everyone loved. I've had so many ideas for video games, I recently started writing a main plot for the game idea I love the most. I don't know exactly what to do, though. I don't completely understand being a Game Designer. I don't want to write books either. I want my dream to come to life, to write scripts for it, too. I just have no idea where to begin with careers. I'm a junior in highschool, I've got to figure out what I have to do to make my real dreams come to life. So, the question I'm asking is: How does one become a script writer, or come up with an idea. How can I put this idea of mine in writing into reality? What do I need to do to become recongized and put in charge?

2. Then study creative writing.
3. First, finish high school. Then get a college degree. In your spare time, and after graduation, make a portfolio that demonstrates your awesome abilities.

Ooooo. Thank you, I'll read them all tomorrow, it's around 9pm here. Though, I'm already reading into some. Thank you so much! These pages look helpful. None of the counselors at my school knew what they were talking about when I asked them these questions.

Hi there,

Always good to see folks interested in game writing. And kudos to you for putting pen to paper and putting in work toward your dreams rather than just talking about it.

I'm not going to dispute Tom's advice because he always offers great advice here, and I certainly agree. Focus on finishing school right now. But in the meantime, read everything you can get your hands on about game design and game writing (two different fields, by the way, though they do intersect.)

I am going to give you an assignment, though. Think about the games that made you want this as a career. Think about what makes them well-written and unforgettable. Then start a free blog at Tumblr, Blogger or Wordpress. Write about these games. Study them. And send me an email with the URL because I'd love to add you to my blogroll. :)

If after reading Tom's articles you have some specific, unanswered questions, by all means ask.
