Game Design Challenge: JRPG Battle Systems
The Challenge

Design a battle system for a role-playing game.
Assignment Details
Role-playing game have been a staple of the video game industry for decades, and while they often share some similar themes and elements, it's a genre that has become increasingly difficult to define.
More often than not, however, role-playing games use some kind of battle system to give players a chance to fight their enemies and show off their ever-improving characters and skills. These systems came in all shapes and forms - Final Fantasy VI, for instance, has players trading turns with the enemy as they select abilities through a series of menus.

Other games, like Nintendo and Monolith Soft's Xenoblade, allow the action to play out dynamically, and players have more direct control over their movement and timing.

For this latest Game Design Challenge, your task is to design a battle system for a traditional role-playing game. Don't worry about crafting a story, or designing characters. Instead, focus on refining the interaction between the player and the AI-controlled opponents.
What sort of resources will the player have to balance? How do they manage their health? What limitations do they have to deal with? Feel free to go wild! There's no need to stick close to examples of games that are already out there. This is a chance to show off your design chops and create a unique approach to combat for this classic genre!

Work on your ideas, figure out your strategy for coming up with a solution, and ask questions on the forum. When your submission is complete, send it to with the subject line "Design Challenge: Role-Playing Battle Systems." Please type your answer directly in the email body.

Submissions should be no more than 500 words and may contain up to three images. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title.
Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 25
Results will be posted Tuesday, May 1

The most defining aspect of a "traditional role-playing game" is the turn-based battle system. So are you telling us to design a turn-based battle system, or can we do ANY kind of battle system? I would assume the latter, except at the end of the challenge you say, as I quoted above, design a battle system for a "traditional role-playing game." If I designed combat like in Skyrim, would that be accepted?
