Bear in mind that there is a US vs UK culture difference in play here. American companies tend to look at things like GPAs to filter through graduates (especially larger companies) whereas in the UK, I find it is much less of an issue.
While I agree with KRowley that a degree isn't necessary (as demonstrated by Media Molecule), in general Tom is right in saying that the blanket advice for aspiring designers is to go for a degree (Psychology, Design, Architecture, etc) unless you already have a better way in already.
