Default Discouragement from parents, school, etc.

Has anyone on this forum faced discouraging remarks from parents, friends, family, school councelors, etc. because of their desire to enter the Games industry?

I know discouragement is part of life and a big part of the game industry, but has anyone expirenced anything that stood out as just obnoxious or unnecessary?

One instance that stands out in my mind is when the seniors at my High School did a career day for the freshmen. I did a presentation on the Video Game Industry (which stood out in the sea of jobs such as "Chicken Farmer" "Construction Worker" and a presentation simply named "Walmart"). Some of the other seniors told me I would be a homeless loser and would never do anything with my life and the counselor told the freshmen I had no clue what I was doing. Needless to say I was pissed off for a good two weeks. My parents are no better.

Has anyone faced something like this?

Um... that bad... no. I didn't face anything like that. Well, let them enjoy cleaning up chicken dung and you enjoy doing what your doing. Right now, everyone I know except my GF are against me going into the gaming industry. It's just a really difficult industry to get in as I see it. If you wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, or just about anything else, there's a college for that; however gaming.. you can't go to a university for that unless it's an "Independent University" and that costs A LOT!

This is something you should show your parents if their still iffy about it:

Other than that, you kinda get used to it, you find out more about the industry and the more I found out; the more I wanted it and wanted to defend it when people criticized it.

I'm willing to bet that if you shifted your focus from 'Game Designer' to something more specific, your presentations and goals would get a more positive reception. I think the title 'Game Designer' is about the worst possible title ever created in the industry. It seems to conjure fantasies about being a guy that was hired for his great idea, who then tells his co-workers to go make them work. There's a reason why a search for "game designer job description" yields more results for colleges selling potential students on the idea and not many results for actual want ads or positions to be filled. It's an unrealistic goal.

The responses you relayed were harsh and unnecessary, so don't dwell on them. If you enjoy writing, focus on refining it and use that to your advantage on your road to a job in the game industry.

It's your opinion that matters, not theirs. Don't let it bother you too much.
