What are some games that are legal to mod?
I wanted to mod the MMO Runescape but found that they sue if you mod it or something. I preferably want to mod an RPG or MMO. Also, is waiting to learn a programming language fluently in a programming class a good idea better than teaching myself. I find it hard to teach myself more than to have someone teach me and push me more rather than just being a train wreck not knowing what I am doing or doing wrong. I mean, if I want to make this a career I figure a class would be better. Oh and one last thing, what is your guys thoughts on Rochester Institute of Technology? RIT: Main Campus Website Game Development Curriculum: Curriculum RIT More of there Game Development Major: http://games.rit.edu/ Last edited by cactaur : 03-06-2011 at 01:29 PM. |

Hi Cac, you wrote:

Read the EULA. >I wanted to mod the MMO Runescape but found that they sue if you mod it or something. What? Where'd you find that? Read the EULA again, more carefully. >Also, is waiting to learn a programming language fluently in a programming class a good idea better than teaching myself. You can do both, if you want. Class learning is generally better, but it always has to be supplemented by practice and additional learning on one's own. >Oh and one last thing, what is your guys thoughts on [school X] "Thoughts" is not a good question. Be more specific, after you read these: http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson44.htm http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson25.htm

I am currently enrolled in RIT's program and it's a great program, we were just ranked by the Princeton Review in the top 10 game development degrees. IF you into development(read: programming) I highly recommend it. I would suggest visiting any school you plan on attending and really look at the curriculum; the balance between development, design, and art are different at every school. Also take a look at WPI, Drexel, DePaul, and USC; they have very similar programs, just to name a few. One word of advice get some basic programming skills before going to school and make sure this is what you want to do, turns out not everyone who likes games enjoys the time commitment required to make them.
On the topic of your original question Valve has some great stuff for modding Half-Life. That's were I got started, and there is a wealth of information on the web regarding those tools. |

If you're looking to mod an RPG, there are several modding communities out there.
NWN is a very popular one. Bioware Modding Info: http://nwn.bioware.com/developers/ Third party links: http://nwn.bioware.com/links/viewcat.html?c=11 Dungeon Siege also has a decent following and a lot of resources can be found at Siege Network : http://www.siegenetwork.com/ Witcher also has a great community and lots of existing tools and mods. A decent start would be WitcherVault: http://witchervault.ign.com/View.php...ry_select_id=2 I'm not sure what some of the other active communities are, though. Runescape or any other commercial MMO... you really don't want to go there. You are correct in that legal action would be pursued if you tried to set up your own modified server - more than likely a Cease and Desist.Good luck with the modding!

2 suggestions: WoW and Starcraft 2.
SC2 in particular. The amount of customisability in that game is amazing. FPSes, RPGs, platformers, TDs, DotAs, Anything. http://www.Sc2mapster.com is a great website for SC2 modding. Feel free to PM wOlfLisK for help if you need it .
