What is the difference between a producer for a developer and for a publisher?

I am researching career paths. Suffice it to say I am not looking for advice but I would like to know the differences in responsibility for a producer on the publisher side of game development and a producer for the developer of the same game.

Also if there is a significant difference in career progression after entry level positions and salary differences.
