If one was serious enough about programming a game, which software would you recommend that is used by companies which actually sell their completed games?

If you want to program everything, Visual Studio 2010 C++ Express Edition. You code gameplay, collision, rendering, AI, etc. If you want some of the work done for you, Unity3D is the way to go; it has convenient functionality such as built-in collision, easy maya mesh importing (drag and drop), rendering, map editor, and many more features.

XNA is also a good choice. Plus, you can test your game in any xbox360.
