Hello advice givers of these forums, I saw you were all fairly useful at giving advice, so I decided maybe I should post what I think, and see if anyone can help me?
![]() So heres my story, I'm 20 years old, graduated high school, I took a 3 month college program that was basically a generic outlook on about 8 different trades. (Welding, Plumbing, Carpentry, etc..) However upon graduating this course, I realized I had no desire to work in the trades. (I've never really been much of a handyman) All my life I've been basically interested in gaming, and reading/writing. However the aspect of coding for gaming, (which may be the most important part to getting started, I don't know?) doesn't seem to interest me. I've been contemplating signing up for college again, with the idea to possibly take a creative writing class, but at the same time I'm still wondering if I should pursue my love of video games. Graphic Design is interesting to me, my high school computer teacher thought I would be good at it, but I never really took that to heart, as all we really had to work with was Illustrator CS5, no type of 3d modelling practice or anything like that. So at this point, I'm not entirely sure what I should do, where I should go, all that kind of stuff... I'm aware learning coding is a big deal, but being a programmer doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy. If it was really required to get into the industry, I might consider it, but if that would be the focus of my possible (more like impossible) future job, I don't think I'd even want to pursue it. If it was something I did as well as the rest of my job however, then it wouldn't be so bad, but I really have done no coding, and I don't know where to start. I would mostly just like to hear anyones thoughts on what I should do, as I myself feel like I'm in an impossible situation, where I just don't know what to do with the rest of my life. Any help appreciated, thanks. Last edited by Zabranth : 01-05-2013 at 09:42 AM. |

Zab,
You do not have to be a programmer to work in games. Just read about the different jobs, pick one or two, then start working on getting a degree and building a portfolio. http://gamecareerguide.com/getting_started/ http://www.skillset.org/games/careers/profiles/ http://archives.igda.org/breakingin/career_paths.htm http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson7.htm http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson34.htm http://www.sloperama.com/advice/m70.htm
