Hi, John! It would really help to know where you're located. There might be a local IGDA chapter you can join or possibly a meetup.com group in your area. For example, I'm aware of an indie meetup that's getting together in Cary, NC this coming Tuesday... but of course that doesn't help if you're not in NC

Sorry for a late reply here. I assume since you've used the term "meet ups" a couple times that you have, of course, already searched meetup.com for "game developers" or "animators" or the like for the areas you'll be visiting. I actually went to my first indie dev meetup this past Tuesday and found it to be a pretty awesome group, so if you can plan your trip in such a way to be present on the day of certain activities like meetups or IGDA meetings you might luck out. Also if you're trying to get a feel for where the game companies are, check out gamedevmap.com.

Finally, if you're looking specifically to collaborate with someone I think this site has a collaboration section where you can post to see if anyone in location XYZ wants to meet up when you're there.

Best of luck!
