The closer you get to March the higher the hotel+airfare prices are going to be. Also, there will be much fewer choices because this is indeed a popular event. You really need to start planning your attack on San Francisco now.

Given what I just said, I was able to secure a hostel 6 short blocks from the event (4 blocks would be riding the electric car) and can take 1 roommate. You'll need to be young as its a youth hostel, but they didn't define an age limit. I would say 25 is a rough cutoff, but if you're interested and you're just over 25, I can call and ask them.

The hostel has free breakfast each day, wi-fi, sheets and pillows, and doesn't make you do any chores. The cost is about half what you would pay at the cheapest hotel, and it looks like a newer building. I plan on being at the GDC the entire week and will fly in the day before to set up shop at the hostel and get re-acquainted with the beautiful city.
