Just like programming I am thinking of doing game design, but how do they really do it? what I'm really trying to say is how do they make the games we play and why would I want to do it.

actually its not that complicated(well it is but not toooooo bad)
most games are made in game engines so all designers have to do is add ingame objects/particles and create the look they want game design is about the structure of a level/game, gameplay elements, scripting etc etc etc if you want to test the water or get an early start you should get yourself a copy of half life2, counter strike source, left for dead, gears of war or unreal tournament 3(ALL PC).they come with level editors and you can create your owns levels and stuff. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube |

If you wanna be a game designer, you gotta live and breath the creation of engaging content. A great example of this is Monty Oum, creator of the Dead Fantasy series. He's a high school dropout, but his awesome work landed him a design job at Namco.
