I personally would never put any Mario game in any of my top 5 lists. Simply because hes been kept alive far longer than he should have, to the point that hes just used for publicity (much like the Final Fantasy series all using the name Final Fantasy).

I'll admit I played a lot of Mario games but I guess it's simply because they are made for casual gamers which I am not. I like games as hard as possible if I die 50 times on a level I don't say "screw this game it's impossible" like a lot of causal gamers would I keep trying until I get it. Although this is bad is many RPG games because making the game harder generally makes it so you must sit in an area and grind for levels or you'll die. At least that is how difficulty is most commonly implemented which simply makes the game boring not challenging. Anyway just thought I would throw my top 5 out there.

5. Final Fantasy VII
Had exteremely good gameplay but doesn't deserve a spot higher than 5 simply because of how old it is. Current gen games may not have better game play mechanics but the games are simply made better I find it hard to play FFVII anymore simply because how painful it is to use the D-pad for movement compared to an analog stick. A remake of this game could potentially move this game up to spot 3 on my list.
4. Assassins Creed
A really good game I have been unable to play the second one yet which I suspect to be much better.
3. Kingdom Hearts 2
KH was good but KH2 was better it was faster paced and action commands added a cinematic feel to the battles which I was a big fan of.
2. Uncharted 2
Simply amazing story line with awesome multiplayer.
1. Demon's Souls
Currently my #1 game it had some pretty obvious flaws although they may have been intended I liked this game simply because it was hard not grind kind of hard but it was difficult. As stated though there were a lot of obvious flaws and the game seemed to suffer from connection problems on a regular basis (most likely due to NAT types). Also you were unable to communicate with the people helping you or that you were helping at all. This often ended with people writing down each others PSN names sending them a friend request and inviting them to a chat room which should not have been necessary. Playing with your friends also didn't work to well if you wanted to play with one of your friends you had to suicide and pick a spot to hide your soulstone on a level and have them summon you. You would often summon people and have them instantly leave once summoned because of this.

(Not in any particular order after 2):

1) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
2) The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
3) Halo: Reach
4) Final Fantasy X
5) Doom 3

Although it's more of a set of games, I also really liked all the Disney Capcom scrollers of the NES era (Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, Chip 'n Dale).

Before I begin my list, I will say that I didn't start playing games until the PS1 and then pretty much dropped vidoe games until my aunt got us a Wii and then I got myself a PS3 (i'm also a Freshman in highschool, so there will be no games on my list that were before the PS1). So, in order of least to most favorite:

5: The TombRaider games (PS1-Don't remember the name, I was seven)
4: Assasin's Creed 1 (PS3)
3: The Conduit (Wii)
2: Monster Hunter 3 (Wii)
1: ALL THE TONY HAWK GAMES, but none of them past the XBox era. The new ones just plain suck.

I'd say as of right now (no particular order after 1st one)

Half Life 2- I just love this game so much. It's the game I played that made me want to do something in the industry.
Left 4 Dead- I love the co-op, the character design, and the Survivors
Portal- Okay, most of my favorite games are Valve games. But do I need to explain this one?
Fallout 3- I don't want to know how many hours of my life have gone to this game
Mass Effect 2- I never realize how many hours have gone by when I play this game because I'm so fully immersed.

The top 5 games for me have been:

Ultima 2
Ultima Online
EVE Online
Wolf 3D

The first two in that list created immersive game worlds unlike anything that I had ever experienced before. The second two created incredible virtual worlds that fascinate me with their diversity not just in options but in people and their behaviour. The last was just plain unadulterated fun that kept me amused for years and popularized a genre of games that I have enjoyed for almost two decades now.

I just can't take a 'best games' list that doesn't include a single Mario game seriously

First five games that came to mind, not in any particular order:

Pokemon Gold
Core Pokemon gameplay with, in my opinion, the longest story that kept me playing. The number of Pokemon was just right, 8 more gyms after beating the game, the first effective coloring in Pokemon. Good memories.

Megaman X
Megaman 2 for the gameboy was my first megaman game, but X stood out to me the most. Classic gameplay, perfect difficulty, great soundtrack. Love it.

Team Fortress 2
By far the best online game ever. Free (and plentiful) updates, great balanced gameplay. Great character design, fantastic maps (sans 2Fort- hate that map), unique graphics/setting and the best developer support that I can think of. Best. Online game/shooter. Ever. +Ever.

Rock Band
We all play it. We all love it. I play music in my freetime so it really strikes a "chord" with me. Rock Band revolutionized how we play rhythm games and I'm ever so upset that their publisher dropped them.

Ocarina of Time
THE action game of action games. I don't need to defend this. Nuff said.
