Hello, my name it Robert Garcia, I am a first year student at Grant MacEwan University located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am interesting in pursuing a career in the field of community management or public relations. I am interested in this filed because I love and am passionate about video games. I would love to have a career where I can work with video games and also have contact with the gaming community. I was wondering if maybe you could point me in the right direction towards achieving this goal. I currently am enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program in my school but I am unsure of which courses I should take to help me get closer to this goal or if I am even in the right program. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. |

Robert, your name sounds familiar.
Anyway, the way you get a job is to do the job. You want to get involved in community management? Get involved in a game community. Try stuff. Learn. You want to get involved in P.R.? Connect with local game companies, volunteer to help them with their public image. To connect with local game companies, I recommend joining the IGDA and using gamedevmap and gameindustrymap. As for classes to take? Use your own good judgment. And your likes and dislikes. These criteria are actually more useful than you can know right now. You'll thank me later (as Monk often says).

Speaking as a CM.. I advise you to develop your writing skills first and foremost. To reiterate: writing, writing, writing.

If you're interested in community management in general, there are some great resources at TheAdminZone that could help you.

Yes You should do what your heart want. If you are interested in game field then follow your dream. You must concentrate on your writing skills as well.
