Hey everybody, with the start of the new school year and the beginning of my senior project we had to choose a game engine to do it in and that got me thinking.
What game engine do you all use primarily? Is what you use on the side different from what you use (or will be using) in school? Give your reasons on why you like/dislike certain engine aspects as well! This year we decided to keep using GarageGames Torque3D (beta3.0). It's been the schools primary teaching tool for designers and has been used in the two senior projects prior in the previous years. I'll be honest when I say I'm not exactly thrilled to be using Torque3D. Everyone has their gripes about it, but at the end of the day GarageGames is doing an admirable job at cleaning things up and providing more documentation for it. Other than that I'm a huge fan of Unreal and Valves Source SDK. I'm in love with how easy Unreal is, but wish it had some of the trigger features that the Hammer engine does. So what do you all use? Let's hear it! --- ryan.george |

I use the CryENGINE, but I have been looking at the Unity engine which seems very powerful for a multi-platform system. You can use Unity to make iPhone, Facebook, Wii and browser based games.

I've messed around with a few editors over the years, starting with WorldCraft (Hammer) and recently settled on UDK and I'm really enjoying it.
Do you have any idea what kind of project you want to tackle?

For my current project I'm using the Unreal Engine (UT3) because I find that it's very simple to use. Plus most of the games that I enjoy have been created by this engine and the Unreal tech seems to be adopted by more and more studios all the time. So I figured the best thing to do is to learn the tech as it looks like it'll be useful to an aspiring designer.
My interest in games however is more action-adventure than FPS so although I'm happy with my map created with UT3 I think I'm going to graduate to the Gears Editor for the Unreal Engine, to produce a single player map (with cinematics) then UDK. Unreal all the way!

You have a strange way of quoting people huale without actually quoting them along with quoting at the end of your post with no response.

I've grown pretty fond of Unity3D over last year or so. The interface and workflow are really pleasing and intuitive to me. There are a lot of good tutorials and the devs provide good feedback and help on their site.
