Hello Forum
I was recently searching the internet and came across this forum. I have been a gamer ever since I can remember, and it has always been my dream to work for a video game company. However, I don't know how or where to start and I'm trying to find some advice. I have a bachelor's degree (a split mathematics/business degree) and am working on an MBA. I wanted to take courses that specifically pertained to game design but I never found any at the colleges I attended. I do well in school, and I have a lot of business, languages, and business Microsoft software (excel, access ect.) skills, along with a tiny bit of programming (VBA), but my main talent is in writing. I have been writing and publishing pen and paper role playing game products for the past three years. In the past year I have gotten very serious about my writing and found that I could write 10,000 to 12,000 words per day (without editing). Some of the products I have written have won seller awards on RPGnow.com and I have appeared on RPGnow.com's podcast once to talk about a game product I created. I always turn in my assignments weeks or months in advance, and can sometimes do them next day (which freaks out my publishers to no end). I have had experience working with game mechanics, design, dialogue, and general writing and editing. I know that the video game field is very elitist, and it's tough to get into. However it is something I really want to do and would be willing to work hard for it. So how would I get a job in the game industry as a writer? Is there anything special I need to do? Do I need to go after a different masters degree than what I am going after now? Or am I spitting in the wind? Thank you for reading this! I appreciate it! |

(Of course, have a portfolio of writings related to the industry you want to enter before doing so) Start a blog. Get reviews, articles, editorials, etc onto it. Hell, write you own magazine if you need to (eg http://www.michaelrbrown.com/?page_id=167 )
