Default I made a game! You should go play it :D

Hello gents! Over the weekend I set out with a goal to make a game in a day. And it's done!

My approach to the design for this game is community based iterative development. I want the people playing the game decide what the next feature is to be implemented. I'd love your feedback! And if you'd be interested in doing art and/or sound for this little project please contact me!

Link to the game: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Rycer/maze-marathon
Link to the Feature Poll: http://www.acepolls.com/polls/120939...ext-feature-be

Thanks for the help and I'm looking forward to your responses!

Cheers,
ryan.george

Awesome concept! Has this been done before?

Some friends and I had thought about it but couldn't really pin anything down. I'm sure it has been done before though. It seems a little nuts if it hadn't that such a simple game would have gone undeveloped in this Angry Bird time that we live in.

Right now I'm working on the next 10 levels. These levels will feature moving walls and platforms. It should turn out kind of cool visually with all the moving elements. We'll see. I'll post when it's updated but expect it at least by next Saturday.

Have you thought about it opening up the design-by-committee scheme even further? I.e., enable people to enter suggestions in text?

Yup! There really isn't an official spot to drop suggestions, I just write them down into my design doc when someone proposes something they'd like to see.

Right now this is what I have:

• Adjustable Speeds
• Speed GUI Elements
• “Extreme” mode (Disables pausing)
• Moving Walls/Obstacles
• Level Skip option
• Art would be nice.
• Getting smaller power-up
• Slow down/ add time powerup.
• Gravity Zones

If there's anything you think would fit well let me know and if I can do it I'll try to get it in!

May I ask how far you are willing to stray from the original design?
Also, are suggestions to remove features also acceptable?

I think an interesting addition might be to add a boost feature that increases player speed and decreases (or disables) the ability to steer. Furthermore, stopping boosting (e.g. by releasing a boost button) will not immediately return normal control—there should be a short transition period where the increased speed and handicapped steering is maintained, or smoothly disappears. This transition period balances the feature and prevents it from abuse by continuous boosting.

Still think this is an awesome concept and I can't wait to see how the game will evolve!

Great idea! Boosting could come into play when levels require players to move through hazard areas at a higher clip.

One thing I like about this is that it's controls are easy, currently the player only needs to understand the movement mechanics and that's it. However I have played with the idea of using the space bar for a feature since it's one of the easier and most commonly used buttons. A boost or dash feature seems like it could fit pretty well there.

As far as how far I'm willing to stray from the initial design- while I would like to keep the game pretty simple to pick up, play, and understand, I'm open to new mechanics. They only thing that would hold something back is if it's a little too out of my scope programming-wise.

Thanks!

Cool.
Say, are you having this discussion and the polls on other fora/blogs/etc. as well? (I'm simply interested in seeing all the input you're getting.)

Most of the feedback I've been getting is via private messages and such. This is actually one of the only (and quite useful) forums that I've been active on.

SIDE NOTE: New game up too! Check for it in another shameless plug on the forum :P
