Default What does it take to get that first job?

Hello everyone,

My focus for the last two years has been mobile game design and programming (iOS).

I quit my previous job (not game or tech related), and with my savings, I've done the following:

-learned iPhone programming
(studied programming years ago but was rusty)

-made several prototypes and released 2 games in the App Store.

-attended 1 mobile devs conference, GDC and a pre-GDC summit.

-Flew in to the West Coast, to meet mobile game companies.

-Sent resumes/samples online by the truck-load.

What I haven't done yet:

-decent gameplay videos (1 is up but I need a better one)
-a website

After a few months, still no job offers. Now I'm also trying out for internships.

Naturally, I'm currently running low on funds, and frustrated at the lack of progress in my search...

What does it take to get that first job?

Ask yourself how many of the Stupid Tricks you've been doing, and start doing a lot more of the Barrier Busters.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm graduated from college with a degree in game design. Currently working two part time jobs to pay the bills. I have applied to a ton of places, still no job (only one interview but had to cancel because it was only a temporary job and I couldn't risk the move at the time for a 2-3 month job). I'm currently working to put out some more quality portfolio pieces to showcase my skills.

I have a portfolio site through "Behance.net" It's $99 for a year or $11 for a month. There are some other good sites that can host your portfolio as well (carbonmade, for one). These are just some options in case you do not know how to make your own website (like me).

Employers definitely want to see your work and what you can do; I would get a portfolio site up as soon as you can.

You probably hear this a lot but Networking is a big help in getting a job as well. It sounds like you are off to a good start with this by attending conferences and by meeting with companies.

Last piece of advice is to try getting an entry level job (much like you are doing), this could be internships or QA. I have heard a lot of people getting their start in QA and getting experience and then working their way up.

Keep your head up! And if you don't mind when you get that portfolio site I would be interested in seeing some of your work. Or is there a place where I can see your gameplay video?

$99 a year is kinda crazy. Just use wordpress.com. The free version gives you a lot and is pretty easy to use. You can also use dropbox to host files (you get up to 2GB of free storage on signup)

Thanks for all the replies,

There's a lot to chew from Mr. Sloper's FAQ's. It's amazing to have such a valuable resource in these forums. The "Location" section really caught me by surprise: Very rarely do employers say "local candidates preferred".

I'm going to wind down my travelling to focus on polishing my second game, website, etc. By the way, that gameplay video is at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uokjCfg5sVA

One thing that's difficult in my approach is that I'm making simple designs that I can code and complete myself. There are no Excel spreadsheets, game economies to balance, or that much graphic or UI design. The very things that employers look for in a designer.

Oh and ZackRibbe, what's the address for your portfolio?

Right. The majority of ads are also for highly experienced people.
A game company will relocate a highly experienced, highly qualified person.
You wouldn't be having this discussion if that description fit you.
So the LocationX3 rule applies to you.
