The faculty of Media at the Hochschule Darmstadt – University of Applied Sciences offers the
following tenure-track, full-time faculty position at the rank of a professor.
The interdisciplinary study programs Digital Media (B.A.) and Media Direction (M.A.) are
mutually operated by experts in Media Design, Media Informatics, Media Technology, Media
Culture and Media Management. The programs educate media experts with the ability to fill
mediation or management functions in interdisciplinary media teams as well as to define and
occupy new concept, design and development tasks in a changing media industry.
Within the progress ofreaccredidation the programme “Digital Media” is offered with an eligiblepathway of “Animation and Game” starting in 2007.
Located in the middle of theRhein-Main area around Frankfurt, which is one of the main centres from theGerman video game industry, we decided to focus the animation courses towardsthe field of computer games, concentrating on the interaction of animation andgames.
The programme is offered jointly bythe German University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (h_da) and the Irish CorkInstitute of Technology (CIT), a cooperation that extends back over some 15years.
The highly project-orientatedlearning takes place in facilities like Computer-labs, AV-Studios,Usability-Labs or Motion Capture-Studio.
The bachelor programme “Digital Media” and the masterprogramme “Media Direction” are based on an interdisciplinary teaching of themain subjects design, technology and economics. These are being complemented bycultural backgrounds and law studies.
The students directly apply for oneof the four pathway study possibilities, Interactive Media, Animation and Game, Videoor Sound.
A pathway consists of courses,tailored to the educational demands of the selected media discipline in the subjectsmedia project, media design, media technology and media informatics.Furthermore the subjects media culture and media management offer overall mediacompetencies.
In the first year the students learnto know various media and experience the typical contents and working processesof the chosen pathway. The initial semesters supply the basic knowledge andskills in all media areas to realize digital media products and media systems.
In the second year the studentsdeepen their knowledge and abilities with application-oriented and practicaltasks and projects. Professional working techniques will be learnedincreasingly. Therefore there will be an industrial placement of eight weeksincorporated in the programme at the end of year two in order to explore the sofar competencies in a practical environment.
In the third year the studentsbroaden their acquired knowledge and abilities with highly professional tasksand projects. At the same time they explore innovative approaches withincurrent media and learn that professional media concepts and media developmentsare subjected to a permanently changing media industry. They learn to developtheir own professionalism continuously and demonstrate their
capacities in the final Bachelorproject. Students are being trained in conceptualization, design, developmentand marketing of animation and digital media in semesterized projects to beworked on in teams of different sizes, overseen by a interdisciplinary group oflecturers. This project strand will intensify and integrate the insights intothe contents taught in lectures and practicals and provide hands on experiencein industrial workflows. An industrial placement phase will further strengthenthese insights.
