Center of Informatics of UFPE
Our commitment to quality and competence in research and education is
only one of the factors responsible for making the Center of
Informatics of the Federal University of Pernambuco one of the largest
and best academic complexes dedicated to Computer Science in Latin
America, and one of top five CS academic centers in Brazil. Great
effort and dedication was needed to acquire the stature enjoyed today.
In 1974, the Statistics and Informatics Department at UFPE was created,
offering degrees and graduate courses in Computer Science. In 1983, the
Informatics Department was separated from the Statistics Department.
Sixteen years later, in 1999, the department, that then was part of the
Center for Exact and Natural Sciences (CCEN), was raised to the level
of Center, with the same status in hierarchy given to other Centers at
UFPE.
With over thirty years of existence, the Center is very important to
the economic and technological development of the state of Pernambuco
and of the rest of the northeastern region of Brazil. This is due in
part to the high academic credentials of the faculty members, 54 of
them with PhD degrees and 3 with MSc degrees, along with constant
improvements in the BSc degree courses (Computer Science and Computer
Engineering) and graduate courses in Computer Science (PhD and MSc
degrees, MBA in Technology Management and other specializations). The
Informatics Center is also always investing in infrastructure to better
assist its students and lecturers.
In the last ten years, the Center has been attracting projects from
large private corporations, promoting the development of new
technologies and processes for the ecosystem. In particular, the Center
maintains a close partnership with great institutions such as
C.E.S.A.R. – The Center for Studies and Advanced Systems of Recife –
and Softex Recife, along with establishing excellent relations (in part
due to the incentives of the Informatics Law) with companies like
Motorola, Samsung, Epson, Itautec, Positivo, Mecaf, Leucotron and
Engentron, originating a successful model of symbiosis between the
University and the ICT industry.
The Informatics Center at UFPE offers undergrad and graduation courses in Game Design and Development as an optinal part of their BSc, MSc and Phd courses.
