The
School of Computing
and Creative Technologies (CCT) at the University
of Abertay Dundee is a
world leader in computer games and computer arts courses. In 2009 Abertay was
able to establish the UK's
first ever centre of excellence for computer games education, thanks to a
£3 million government investment.
The
Computer Games and Computer Arts courses are taught out of the University's
pioneering 'White Space', an innovative learning and teaching environment which
sees students working alongside PhD students and lecturers, together with
business professionals, broadcasters and artists, allowing students to benefit
from the buzz of a real working environment and share knowledge with industry
professionals.
White
Space features the Human
Interactive Virtual Environment (HIVE)
- a multi-purpose
space with TV studio, film and digital image realisation capabilities. The HIVE
is also home to the cutting edge total immersion video environment for
interaction with virtual environments including 3D stereo vision, and surround
sound. Offering walk and grab capabilities, one person recordable head tracker
and the potential to project a live object into a virtual background.
A new games lab was added in 2008
and a further two studio environments will be created in 2009 as part of the
Centre of Excellence.
Abertay is also home to
international student computer game design competition ‘Dare to be
Digital’. Dare to be Digital is world
renowned and recognised as the premier new talent spotting opportunity in the UK
computer games industry. See www.daretobedigital.com

Abertay
is an exciting and fun place to study, offering challenging courses in cutting-edge
technologies and the opportunity for careers in next generation technologies
and smart systems. Graduates from the
School have gone on to become leaders in the games industry while academics have
developed international reputations in Computer Arts, and are currently leading
the way in the explosion of digital entertainment in wireless, mobile and
traditional networks.
The School
continues to be ground-breaking in the development of new courses, as the
latest offerings in Smart Systems and Ethical Hacking demonstrate. Numerous
international collaborations provide a multicultural environment at Abertay,
and significant opportunities for overseas study. In 2009, Peking and Shanghai
Universities became the
first international partners for Abertay’s Centre of Excellence in Computer
Games Education.
