    The University of Wales, Newport is unique in providing both creative and technical support for people interested in Computer Games Development, and has one of the highest employment records for graduates in the UK. The creative industries are one of the fastest growing employment sectors in Europe with artists, designers, modellers and programmers in demand from a startling range of industries, anxious to harness their creative talent.

    The Newport School of Art, Media and Design is a creative hub that encourages creativity and innovation in an exciting and supportive environment that has been producing the artists, designers and filmmakers of the future for decades. The BA (Hons) Computer Games Design at Newport focuses on the creative and artistic aspects of contemporary games production. The course builds on the core of animation, narrative and character development skills that are well established our Skillset accredited BA (Hons) Animation programme. You will be introduced to the critical and cultural analysis of videogames through a comprehensive series of lectures and seminars, for which Newport is a recognised centre of excellence.

    The Division of Computing (part of the Newport Business School) is unique in providing the right mix of Games Programming and Artificial Intelligence needed for the next generation of computer games, where intelligent agents within the game are as important to game play as the fantastic models and environment. The BSc (Hons) Games Development and Artificial Intelligence is unique in the UK, applying itself to creative and technical aspects of both the engines that drive games and the characters that inhabit them.

    We give students access to a range of current software, and support them in developing their own creative practice, technical skills and conceptual understanding that are central to the computer games industry. Students are introduced to the Critical and cultural analysis of videogames through a comprehensive series of lectures, for which Newport is a recognised centre of excellence. Both schools provide a complementary framework for anyone interested in the computer games industry, with some shared modules to enhance the student experience.

    The programme team has excellent links with the computer games industry leaders, providing the course with an inspiring programme of visiting guest lecturers. The course also has strong links with Synergy, the computer games design research group based at the University. The staff are internationally respected academics within their field, responsible for widely cited written work on the academic analysis of games, and games design and production. In addition to their practical experience they regularly present at conferences in the USA, Asia, Australasia and Europe, and have been involved in the development of games design education since its inception in the United Kingdom.

    Students from the course have gone on to work for companies such as Blitz Games, Sega, Enzyme, Dark Horizons and Funcom, have had internships with EA Games, and won competitive scholarships to attend the Game Developers Conference in the USA.
