  • GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.

Every other Wednesday we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted, along with some commentary.

    The Challenge

    Update a classic arcade game.

    Assignment Details

This week, Namco Bandai is launching Pac-Man Champsionship Edition DX, which is an upgrade to the original Xbox Live Arcade hit which debuted in 2007.

What the game does so well is not just that it presents a classic to a new audience: it takes the game in creative new directions. The developer attempted to do the same thing with Galaga Legions to somewhat mixed results, too.

By the way, if you want to know more about what makes these two games tick, you should check out this Gamasutra interview.

You can also see a similar idea driving Taito's Space Invaders: Infinity Gene on the iPhone, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade.

Your job: pick a classic arcade game -- could be obscure, could be mega-popular -- and create a brand new edition for the download platform of your choice, highlighting new and innvoative play mechanisms, social integration, and whatever else you think it needs to get "up to 2010" speed.

    To Submit

Work on your ideas, figure out your strategy for coming up with a solution, and ask questions on the forum. When your submission is complete, send it to gamedesignchallenge@gamecareerguide.com with the subject line "Design Challenge: CE DX." Please type your answer directly in the email body.

Submissions should be no more than 500 words and may contain up to three images. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title.

Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, December 1

Results will be posted Tuesday, December 7
