The computer game development programmes at the University of Skövde started in 2002, and currently consist of five three-year bachelor (kandidat) programmes with a total of eight specialized profile areas and two one-year master’s (magister) educations.

During their studies, students from all the basic level programmes will work in different project courses for a total of 30 ECTS during the first and second year. The students from all programmes and all special profiles are mixed within these courses to mimic how a professional game development team works when producing digital games. There are also project oriented courses within the different programmes. The University of Skövde puts the emphasis on entrepreneurship, and quite a few students have started companies at Gothia Science Park during or after their studies.

From quite a modest start with about 30-40 students admitted in 2002, the programmes have grown to admit 210 students in autumn 2011. Currently around 425+ students study computer game development at the University of Skövde, and statistics show that it is the largest and most popular academic education concerned with computer games in Sweden. It is also the broadest in terms of the areas covered within special profiles.

Even though these programmes are only ten years old, many students have advanced to working positions within computer game companies such as CCP Games, EA DICE, Ubisoft Massive, Paradox Interactive, Starbreeze, Crytech and numerous others.
