  • Sam Houston State University offers a BFA in Computer Animation through the Department of Art. Students in the Computer Animation Program take foundation courses in Drawing, Design, and Art History with students in the Graphic Design, Photography and Studio Programs.

SHSU’s Art Department has 2 studios dedicated exclusively for Computer Animation Students. A Macintosh lab and PC lab have over thirty workstations running Maya, 3D Studio Max, Lightwave, Z-Brush, AfterEffects, ToonBoom Studio and Flash.

Professors are certified Maya instructors, game developers currently working in the industry, and fine artists exhibiting at museums and galleries. Students learn traditional concepts and techniques in 2D Animation and are offered courses in organic and hard surface 3D Modeling, Lighting, Shading, and Rendering, 3D Animation for Interactive Games, Pre-visualization, and Character Animation. In combination with the History of Animation these courses culminate into a Senior Portfolio class where students create a demo reel.

The Art Department has developed relationships with gaming studios in New York and California and students receive training from lead artists at these studios through live video feeds and on campus visits.
