Hello,
I will be a junior in high school in a month and I was just wondering what programs I should learn or what engines I should practice on to get a head start for college. I was thinking about taking a class at my JC that focused on 3ds Max or Maya. Any other suggestions? P.S I just downloaded a trail of Torque and was gonna fool around in that for a while. Is that a good place to start? EDIT: you couldnt do anything in the torque trail. But how about the cube 2 engine? Is that a good place to start? Hello, I'm not too familiar with game design quit yet cause I only took 3 small classes so far, but I would definitely learn how to model in 3ds max.

Well, a few problems. You didn't mention any sort of degree you are going after, so I'm just assuming you want to be a game designer.
Start thinking about a wicked cool game design concept for a table top board game. Make SOMETHING! Use your creative juices. In the realm of computing, just work on a MOD from a game like Neverwinter Nights 2 (if you are interested in RPGs), or something else. I'm not sure that you would want to dip into Torque right now, or any game engine for that matter. Take baby steps, and good luck! Oh, and don't forget, keep playing games!

Another thing to do is take to random objects and make a game design out of them.

It all depends on what you want to do,
Try out programming see if it clicks, If that doesnt work try out Game Art and Design. Your not going to start off as a game designer, so I wouldnt worry too much about the "Game Designing". It is important to know the Design Concepts, I would start small, make some vehicles in 3ds max, then make some characters or creatures. The key is not to give up, and once you start don't stop. Ive seen alot of people go halfway... they wont make it in the real world. When I started I joined a "mod" and learned everything I could about a game engine, most things apply to all game engines, so learn one thoroughly, the little things will always be different. Its the same with the 3d software packages. ITS ALL ABOUT LEARNING THE CONCEPTS ![]() |

Ahh lol, same here I'm 16 next year, O levels in a year, theres nothing special about my school, just some public school, but i'm going to learn 3D modeling myself as a start, and life drawing studies and a lot more, i've been doing concept art for a while and now heading for minor 3D modeling by sculpting, just want to share with you, i'm using Blender freeware, you can get it here at www.blender.org hope you enjoy.
The passion is the key for this, imagination as an adds.I want to make my dream-game to real life ! I want it to happen ! omgwtfbbq ftw. |
