Add some LED's to those glasses and a camera to the console, add a bit of fancy coding and I think it'd have a far more immersive effect...at least for the person playing. See what Jonny Lee did for Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote

I was thinking a similar thing, I seem to remember Mr Lee made a point that combining the two would give fairly spectacular results. Probably a huge television would be quite necessary though.
