  • Game Design Challenge: Rickroll

  •'s Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.

    Every other Wednesday we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted, along with some commentary.

    The Challenge

    Rickroll your way to a great game.

    Assignment Details

    Remember Rickrolling? Sure, we all do. Okay, it's a little dated, but...

    The basic idea, if you don't, was to send someone to a camouflaged link to the video for Rick Astley's '80s hit Never Gonna Give You Up. It became a phenomenon because it was based around tricking someone -- a harmless and humorous joke.

    Can a game be devised around the concept of tricking someone? And who will you trick? Will you trick the player, or will the player trick the other characters in the game? The field is wide open to come up with a totally original concept based around fooling or tricking someone.

    Bonus points for adding Rick Astley in. (Note: that's not true. We don't even have a point system.)

    And, before you ask, this isn't a trick.

    To Submit

    Work on your ideas, figure out your strategy for coming up with a solution, and ask questions on the forum. When your submission is complete, send it to [email protected] with the subject line "Design Challenge: Rickroll." Please type your answer directly in the email body.

    Submissions should be no more than 500 words and may contain up to three images. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title.

    Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 7

    Results will be posted Tuesday, April 13
